Guess What!?

Posted on January 25, 2010. Filed under: Uncategorized |

There are some changes going to be taking place around here! After only a couple days I have gotten some pretty insightful information via my survey. So here is a little bit of what I have gleaned from the results…..

What people liked the most about the blog…..

1. People seemed to like when I was doing my “Beginning, middle and end” reactions.

2. That there’s a LOT of honesty going around.

3. That my layout is pretty clean.

What people liked least…..

1. No header (coming soon…this will change)

2. More information in my reviews.

3. LONGER reviews (I’ll do my best)

What you want to see more of….

1. Teasers

2. Discussion posts!  ( I really do like doing these)

People seemed to really like the discussion posts according to the results I got.

Blogger vs. WordPress ……The winner was Blogger.

Do you like how my contests are run?……

Overall, the answer was YES.

More guest blogs, author interviews, contests?….

This one was torn down the middle.  Some really liked the idea’s of guest blogs, author interviews and contests and some didn’t.

NOW for the fun part!  Letting you know what the changes are going/or not going to be!

1. I will be going back to my “beginning, middle and end” reactions.

2. I will be trying my hardest to include more in my reviews and make them longer.

3. I will be moving BACK to Blogger…..In all honesty I moved to wordpress soley because of the followers widget.  It was a hasty decision that I have come to regret. Mainly because I like to change up the look of my blog every now and then and I am SERIOUSLY limited here on wordpress.  After doing some sole searching about the direction I want to take my blog and conducting this survey I have come to the conclusion that I will be moving back to Blogger.  Complete with a new make over and a new name!  The Book Junkie’s Bookshelf is the new name…It is up and running but not all the links are correct yet (I’m working on it.)

4. There for sure will be MORE discussion posts.

5. I will be giving “extra credit” for tweeting and sidebar mention on contests.  Winners will still be drawn randomly.

6. I will keep up with my ecclectic reading tastes.

7. I will try to have more contests.

8. I am going to try and do some author interviews.

9. For those who aren’t so keen on guest blogs, I will try to keep these to a minimum.

Bloggy Pet Peeves

Posted on January 24, 2010. Filed under: Discussion Posts | Tags: |

In this discussion post I am going to discuss some of my bloggy “pet peeves.”  I’m sure that there are others out there who have these same “pet peeves” as well. I’m not looking to “trash” anyone about their blog I am just going for an overall these are my pet peeves.  So let’s get started…it ought to be pretty interesting to say the least!

1. Only allowing certain registered users of a certain blogging format comment on a blog….I see this A LOT on Blogger….I’ve even seen blogs where only registered Blogger users can comment.  Am I not good enough to comment on your blog because I happen to blog at wordpress?

2. Music on Blogs….I do most of my blogging on my days off.  Since I work the graveyard shift I’m up when the rest of the “world” is sleeping and sleeping when the rest of the “world” is up.  Because I do most of my blogging while the other people who live at my house are sleeping music on blogs irk’s me cause I’m trying NOT to wake everybody up.

3. Distracting fonts/color of fonts/size of fonts….This is just flat out annoying. It actually makes me NOT want to read the post if there is entirely way too much going on.  My ADD brain can’t handle it!

4. Word verification….FLAT OUT ANNOYING!  Especially if it’s in that nifty cool “you click ‘submit comment’ and SURPRISE you get another window with the word verification in it” format that Blogger has.  In the time it takes to deal with all that word verification “red tape” I could have left SEVERAL comments.

5. Anything that flashes, moves, makes noise or is animated….TALK ABOUT DISTRACTING!  I’m there to read about the books you like to read NOT be distracted by some graphic.

6. Leaving EXPIRED “countdowns” on your blog…..If the book, movie, etc. is now out please take the “countdown” widget down please. It’s irritating.

7. Not making contact information accessible or easy to find….I think this one is pretty self explanatory.

Now I’ve shared with you some of my biggest bloggy pet peeves….Now here’s my question for you….What are some of YOUR bloggy pet peeves?

Synopsis: from Barnes and Noble

Take Romeo and Juliet. Add The Outsiders. Mix thoroughly.

Colt and Julia were secretly together for an entire year, and no one—not even Julia’s boyfriend— knew. They had nothing in common, with Julia in her country club world on Black Mountain and Colt from down on the flats, but it never mattered. Until Julia dies in a car accident, and Colt learns the price of secrecy. He can’t mourn Julia openly, and he’s tormented that he might have played a part in her death. When Julia’s journal ends up in his hands, Colt relives their year together at the same time that he’s desperately trying to forget her. But how do you get over someone who was never yours in the first place?

Review: I had read all sorts of great reviews all over the book blogging community about this book enough so that I HAD TO HAVE a copy of it for myself.  I’m really glad that I decided to spend the money on it because IT TOTALLY LIVED UP TO THE HYPE!  This is another one of those stories that has a “Romeo and Juliet” feel to it…not so much a re-telling but it most definately has that feel to it.  See Colt and Julia were seeing each other secretly for a year and then Julia is killed in a car accident.  Shortly after the school year begins Julia’s brother gives Colt a notebook that Julia had written letters to him in and Colt goes through the process of reliving their year together while also trying to get over Julia and move on.  Which isn’t so easy for him.

Overall, I really enjoyed this debut novel.  I really liked the author’s writing style and even went above and beyond to make even the worst character(s) in the book sort of likeable.  I guess the only reason this book doesn’t get a 5/5 is because I was a little luke warm on the ending….It wasn’t a terrible ending but it also wasn’t the best ending I’ve ever read either.

Synopsis: from Barnes and Noble

Awakened from a drugged sleep in a cold cell, the Princess Kiara finds herself a prisoner of the merciless marauders who threaten her father’s planetary kingdom. Miraculously, a rescuer appears, but behind his fearsome mask is the handsome face of a dark avenger whose outlaw touch sets her very soul aflame.

Review:  I had read all over the internet that this series was supposed to be really good.  I am totally LOVING the Dark Hunter series so I thought I’d give this one a try and I was NOT happy.  I tried several times to get into this book and it just was NOT happening for me.  I guess what frustrates me the most is that I waited MONTHS for my number to come up in the library system and I wasn’t able to get into the book.

Synopsis: from Barnes and Noble

A fresh, urban twist on the classic tale of star-crossed lovers. When Brittany Ellis walks into chemistry class on the first day of senior year, she has no clue that her carefully created “perfect” life is about to unravel before her eyes. She’s forced to be lab partners with Alex Fuentes, a gang member from the other side of town, and he is about to threaten everything she’s worked so hard for—her flawless reputation, her relationship with her boyfriend, and the secret that her home life is anything but perfect. Alex is a bad boy and he knows it. So when he makes a bet with his friends to lure Brittany into his life, he thinks nothing of it. But soon Alex realizes Brittany is a real person with real problems, and suddenly the bet he made in arrogance turns into something much more. In a passionate story about looking beneath the surface, Simone Elkeles breaks through the stereotypes and barriers that threaten to keep Brittany and Alex apart.

Review: NOTE: I just recently gave away a copy of this book so I’m going to keep this review short so I don’t give away the story for the person who won.I had heard so many AWESOME things about this book all over the book blogging community that I felt that I needed to read this book in order to determine if it lived up to all the AWESOME things that I had read about it.  Needless to say, I am pleased to report that it most definately did.  While I was reading Perfect Chemistry I almost automatically thought of it as a retelling of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet only with a happier ending.  I really loved the characters…You felt for them both.  Both of their lives are basically one big lie to keep themselves from being too vulnerable, but the scary part for both of them is that they both see right through each other.  The story itself was pretty great….once I got started reading the book I soooo did NOT want to put it down.  I really liked that the story was told from each character’s point of view so you always knew what the characters were thinking.  Overall, I most definately have found a new author to add to my list of favorite authors!
