Guess What!?

Posted on January 25, 2010. Filed under: Uncategorized |

There are some changes going to be taking place around here! After only a couple days I have gotten some pretty insightful information via my survey. So here is a little bit of what I have gleaned from the results…..

What people liked the most about the blog…..

1. People seemed to like when I was doing my “Beginning, middle and end” reactions.

2. That there’s a LOT of honesty going around.

3. That my layout is pretty clean.

What people liked least…..

1. No header (coming soon…this will change)

2. More information in my reviews.

3. LONGER reviews (I’ll do my best)

What you want to see more of….

1. Teasers

2. Discussion posts!  ( I really do like doing these)

People seemed to really like the discussion posts according to the results I got.

Blogger vs. WordPress ……The winner was Blogger.

Do you like how my contests are run?……

Overall, the answer was YES.

More guest blogs, author interviews, contests?….

This one was torn down the middle.  Some really liked the idea’s of guest blogs, author interviews and contests and some didn’t.

NOW for the fun part!  Letting you know what the changes are going/or not going to be!

1. I will be going back to my “beginning, middle and end” reactions.

2. I will be trying my hardest to include more in my reviews and make them longer.

3. I will be moving BACK to Blogger…..In all honesty I moved to wordpress soley because of the followers widget.  It was a hasty decision that I have come to regret. Mainly because I like to change up the look of my blog every now and then and I am SERIOUSLY limited here on wordpress.  After doing some sole searching about the direction I want to take my blog and conducting this survey I have come to the conclusion that I will be moving back to Blogger.  Complete with a new make over and a new name!  The Book Junkie’s Bookshelf is the new name…It is up and running but not all the links are correct yet (I’m working on it.)

4. There for sure will be MORE discussion posts.

5. I will be giving “extra credit” for tweeting and sidebar mention on contests.  Winners will still be drawn randomly.

6. I will keep up with my ecclectic reading tastes.

7. I will try to have more contests.

8. I am going to try and do some author interviews.

9. For those who aren’t so keen on guest blogs, I will try to keep these to a minimum.

Did you know that if you are without a computer for 4 days and you aren’t able to check your google reader you end up with 770 blog posts to check out and at some point comment on?  Just a little randomness there for y’all.

Plus, I’m working on somethings for February….1. because it’s my birthday month (the 21st is the day to be exact) and 2. because I’ve seen it done on other blogs and I want to try my hand at it too!

What you will and won’t see on my blog in 2010

Posted on January 5, 2010. Filed under: Uncategorized |

Here is what you won’t find on my book blog in 2010:

1. When it comes to giveaways…You won’t find a giant hoop you have to jump through in order to have a chance to win.  I see it all over the book blogging community….all these extra chances for extra entries (I’m not knocking it…In the past I’ve even done it.  I just find it harder to have a “good time” with my giveaway when I have to keep so many details in order.).  For example, in my current giveaways (which can be found on my Giveaways/Contests page)….I ask for your name, contact information (e-mail address in one, mailing address in the other) and a totally random question.  Then I will randomly draw a winner.  Pretty straight forward from know on.

2.  I’ll be only posting reviews of books as I finish them.  This is in an effort to not burn myself out on blogging.

3. I am working diligently to keep my challenge posts updated with all the reviews I’ve completed.

4. I will continue to participate in In My Mailbox and On My Wishlist

Commitment-phobic Sam Carson has only dated model-gorgeous women. But one stolen kiss from a plain-Jane schoolteacher and he’s hell-bent on stripping away her floral dresses and teaching her the art of being bad. If only her good-girl ways didn’t make him want to be a better man…

Ally Giordano is at the end of her rope. Her beloved grandmother actually believes that she’s living in her favorite romance novel in Regency England and Ally doesn’t have the heart to set her straight. But now Granny Donny’s last wish is for a retreat to the country and Ally can’t refuse her…until she demands that Sam accompany them. And though his smiles turn her knees into jelly, Ally knows better than to trust a playboy…and she definitely knows better than to try to change one. Or does she?

Review:  Overall, I really liked this book.  It’s a little smut in a pretty package.  Loved Granny Donny…In all her Regency era mindset.  Ally was kind of a hard ass though…But still likeable.  I guess you get to be a bit of a hard ass when life dumps on you pretty bad. Sam has a heart of gold under all those bad boy tendencies too.  I’ve never read this author before but I do like her writing style a lot.  I’ll be reading more of her books for sure!

The Last Surgeon Review/Giveaway

Posted on December 24, 2009. Filed under: Fiction, Medical, Michael Palmer, Reviews, Thrillers, Uncategorized | Tags: , |

Click to read the prologue to The Last Surgeon.

I received this medical thriller to review last week in the mail.  Until I received it I honestly did not know that said genre of book even existed.  So that being said let me start my review by saying that if you have never read a medical thriller please give Michael Palmer’s books a shot.  Especially this one!  I had a very difficult time putting it down to do basic everyday things like…laundry, eating, running errands, sleeping, you know basic everyday things.

The medical aliment that is centered around the book is Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome.  One of our main characters Dr. Nick Garrity suffers from this medical condition.  Nick was a surgeon in the military and witnessed a pretty horrible incident at the medical hospital that he was working at while deployed.  As a result of having Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome Nick had pretty much given up “living” and had become a shell of himself.  He had given up the medical practice that he was at and pretty much all that was his life before this incident accorded.  There are two things that keep him going , one is Helping Hands which is a mobile “hospital” that Nick and his nurse friend Junie run, offering medical care to those who really can’t afford to go to a regular hospital, while also helping fellow veterans try and get their veteran’s benefits.  The other is his mission to find out what really happened to his Marine friend Umberto, who just up and disappeared one day four years earlier.

Our other main character, Jillian Coates, is convinced that her sisters death was not a suicide.  She believes that her sister was murdered. When going through her sisters things she came across a set of comic books where the main character is Dr. Nick Fury and while on a radio show trying to get some information a caller tells her that Dr. Nick Fury isn’t just a comic book character but an actual person, Dr. Nick Garrity.  Jillian and Dr. Garrity meet up and go over what they know, which at this point isn’t much, but they are convinced that the death of Jillian’s sister and the disappearance of Umberto are connected.

Meanwhile, waiting in the wings is a paid killer, who refers to himself as the master of the “non-kill” (the art of making a murder look like a suicide). This character is one sick S.O.B. (pardon my “french”).  Over the course of the book there are several more “non-kills” that are commited that are all linked to one particular surgical procedure done on a high profile patient about 4 years prior.  This procedure, we find out links Jillian’s sister to Umberto and in the end Jillian to Nick.

There’s a LOT going on in the book but it all flows well together.  I have to say that my favorite part of the book was when a teenage computer hacker get’s the better of a crooked plastic surgeon.  Oh, and when Jillian gets the better of the killer….That was pretty AWESOME too.  Overall, this was an AWESOME read!  I will definately be reading more of Michael Palmer’s books in the future!

This book was sent to me by the author.
